Sharing “Green Career” Journeys and Pathways with SSE Renewables

8 November 2023

SSE Green Careers Week 4

We were delighted to catch up with SSE Renewables during #GreenCareersWeek to find out from some of their team about the job roles in the Green Energy sector. The company employ 1,300 people across the UK, Ireland and is a clean energy champion with a growing presence internationally in Europe, Asia and North America, delivering the green energy the world needs. Its strategy is to lead the transition to a net zero future through the world-class development, construction and operation of renewable power assets and they’re building more offshore wind energy than any other company in the world. SSE Renewables is also kindly co-sponsoring the Green Energy Careers Expo hosted by DYW on 27th February 2024 at Alness Academy.

James, Jenny and Eilidh share their thoughts about working for SSE Renewable in the dynamic Green Sector across the Highlands.

James Morrison - Onshore Wind C&I TST

“My role means I get to travel throughout the Highlands, seeing amazing sights with great views learning about many different systems including electrical, mechanical and C&I, as well as gaining a HND in renewable energy and engineering systems. I thoroughly enjoy working for SSE Renewals and for anyone thinking about joining the sector, I believe the main skills you need are: being confident and putting yourself out there, not being afraid to try new things, communicating within a team and not being afraid to ask questions.”

Jenny Chambers - Environmental Advisor

“As an Environmental Advisor with SSE Renewables, we have a wide range of environmental and biodiversity responsibilities. Travelling to beautiful locations to implement Habitat Management Plans and species monitoring programmes that are required under the wind farm planning consent and report to the regulators. An Environmental Advisor works closely with civil, mechanical and electrical engineers and other specialists to deliver best practice environmental management on wind farms. As wind energy is a relatively new industry, the role also includes delivering biodiversity initiatives and research projects in conjunction with the sustainability team, universities and industry bodies.”

Eilidh Edgar - Stakeholder Engagement Manager

“Recently joining SSE Renewables after a varied career, I never thought I would be working within the Green Sector. My role supports the local communities we work within, helping people understand the projects we are developing, ensuring the community is kept updated and supported throughout. I love my job, as no two days are the same or in the same location. One day, I might be meeting a Councillor to discuss an issue, another I could be working with pupils in a school or taking stakeholders out for a site visit. Every day I learn something new and fascinating as there are so many different aspects and considerations to Onshore Wind. “
